Road Safety in India

Every safe driver saves a life on the road

Government Initiatives

India's 4E strategy for road safety

The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways (MoRTH) follows a multi-pronged strategy based on four pillars to address road safety across India.

Education

Awareness campaigns through electronic & print media. National Road Safety Month/Week is observed every year to spread awareness and strengthen road safety education among all age groups.

Engineering

Identification and rectification of black spots on national highways. Road safety is made an integral part of road design. Guidelines for pedestrian facilities have been issued to all States and UTs.

Enforcement

The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 provides for strict enforcement using technology and strict penalties for traffic violations including drunk driving, over-speeding, and use of mobile phones while driving.

Emergency Care

The MV Amendment Act, 2019 provides for cashless treatment of accident victims during the golden hour. Ambulances are available at all toll plazas on National Highways to reduce fatalities.

Stay Safe

10 essential road safety tips for every driver

At Sri Ragavendra Driving School, we teach these road safety principles as part of every training programme.

Always Wear a Seatbelt

Seatbelts reduce the risk of death in a crash by up to 45%. Make it a habit every time you get in.

  • Mandatory for all occupants
  • Reduces ejection from vehicle

Never Drink & Drive

Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction time. Drunk driving is one of the top causes of fatal road accidents in India.

  • Zero tolerance for drunk driving
  • Plan an alternate ride home

Follow Speed Limits

Speeding is a leading cause of road accidents. Always follow the posted speed limits and adjust speed for road conditions.

  • Reduce speed in school zones
  • Slow down in rain and fog

No Mobile Phone While Driving

Using a mobile phone while driving increases the risk of an accident by 4 times. Keep your phone away when behind the wheel.

  • Use hands-free if necessary
  • Pull over safely to make calls

Wear a Helmet

Helmets reduce the risk of fatal head injuries for two-wheeler riders by up to 40%. Always wear an ISI-marked helmet.

  • Mandatory for rider & pillion
  • Choose ISI-certified helmets only

Observe Traffic Signals

Traffic signals save lives. Running red lights and ignoring road signs are common causes of intersection accidents.

  • Stop fully at red signals
  • Give way to pedestrians
